In April 2018, Class 5a Toruń for a day of art, culture and Polish history activities. There were 5 main learning activities for the day: a show at the Planetarium, learning about some of Toruń’s historic buildings, a guided tour of a contemporary art exhibition by “Łukasza Patelczyka Migotanie / Scintillation” (CSW Toruń), a drawing and photography project in gallery at CSW Toruń, and finally a Gingerbread-making workshop at Muzeum Piernika.
The students’ experience of the old city included learning about the Old Town Hall / Ratusz Staromiejski, the Leaning Tower (Old City Walls, Medieval Defensive Walls), the House of Nicolaus Copernicus and the Nicolaus Copernicus Monument. They also had ‘free time’ to explore the centre of the old town with their cameras and to do some shopping!! I think every family received gifts of Toruń’s famous Gingerbread!!
In the exhibition “Łukasza Patelczyka Migotanie / Scintillation” at the Centre of Contemporary Art Znaki Czasu Toruń (CSW Toruń) we had an excellent guided tour by the CSW Curator Mateusz Kozieradzki, and following that, we asked the students to work in the gallery making sketches and photographs to learn from and interpret the artist’s paintings. The students diligently and thoughtfully engaged with this project and their sketches and notes will be used as the basis for further art works back at school.
The class was accompanied by their art teacher Rob Garrett, Polish history and ethics teacher Małgosia Niwińska, and homeroom teacher Grażyna Urbańczyk.
The group travelled by charter bus and explored the city on foot.
